I first saw a video showcasing the Quilt Block Shadow card on Tina Zinck’s YouTube channel. And, I instantly fell in love with this design for two reasons. First, I find it therapeutic in its repetitiveness, and it helps you use up a lot of scraps. In this class we used a retired pack of paper, New Horizons, and the Painted Texture 3D embossing folder.
This is the finished card. It uses a black card base, a layer of the patterned paper and the quilt blocks with shadows. The Thoughtful Moments hybrid embossing folder adds a great touch for the sentiment.
First, you have to cut a lot of 1 1/4″ squares from both black card stock and patterned paper. Then glue them together, offset just enough on two sides to give a shadow effect.
These blocks are then arranged on another piece of New Horizons patterned paper. I think it’s more pleasing to the eye to have a nice mix of colors, and this paper pack has a ton of color, as you can see from the pictures above.
It can be a little difficult to get the same amount of shadow on each piece. But, if you really take your time, it can be done. Overall, I find this Quilt Block Shadow Card to be a very clever little technique, and one that I will probably return to often.
