The masking and inking
At this month’s workshop, we used masked ink blending to create a mountainous background. A simple sheet of torn paper is the mask, that we move down the card, and use different ink colors in the same color family. This creates the depth in our mountain background. I offered three different color options to choose from.
The cutting
After the card stock panel (4 1/2″ x 4) is ink blended, the panel is cut down. This is where two 3/4″ strips are cut from each side. Then they are adhered to a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of black card stock with about a 1/8″ separation. See below.
This makes it appear as if looking through a window pane into the distance. Then adhere the panel to the card base. To continue the look, a 1/8″ piece is cut from the white circle (moon) before adhering it to either side of the black opening space.
We used the Rooted in Nature bundle framelits to cut trees from black card stock to create silhouettes. Then these are attached to the front of the card. See two of the finished cards below.
Finishing the cards
The banner at the bottom is heat embossed with white embossing powder. The strip of black card stock is either torn or cut with deckling scissors and then, attached either flat or with dimensionals.
The various inks used are: Highland Heather, Perfect Plum and Elegant Eggplant on Highland Heather card stock; Peek-a-boo Peach, Grapefruit Grove and Calypso Coral on Crushed Curry card stock; and Blushing Bride, Flirty Flamingo and Cherry Cobbler on Blushing Bride card stock.
This card design is inspired by Lynn Dunn of stamptasticdesigns. She uses patterned paper as her background. I took her design a step further by creating our own background scene with masked ink blending. And to think, I told the group the month before, that this would be an easy class. I had to keep the class short so I could get to my bowling tournament, which I actually did pretty well in.
Disclaimer
While creating this card in March of 2023, the main elements of this masked ink blending card are no longer available through Stampin’Up! The die cut silhouettes are part of the Rooted in Nature bundle and the sentiment is taken from the Morning Star stamp set (also retired). Nevertheless, you will find plenty of wonderfully creative products at my online store. And tons of great inspiration at my pinboard.
